While reviewing any tablet, the first point of comparison is quite naturally with the iPad and this is no exception. The Xoom is quite similar to iPad in terms of shape as well as size and is made up of high quality materials. In the design department the approach is minimalistic as well.
Google Android Tablet Pc 10
The tablet comes with a 10.1-inch HD screen that has a resolution of 1280x800 as well as multi-touch functionality. The hardware consists of a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor and there is 1GB of RAM in the unit. It has 32GB of internal solid state storage space that facilitates the storage of apps, music, movies and other files.
It comes with a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for making video calls and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with a nice dual-LED flash. The first model is 3G compliant but it will be possible to upgrade to 4G. In addition to this there are the usual features including a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, Bluetooth, and as mentioned earlier the platform is Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, which has been created specifically for tablets.
Pros
What really works for the Motorola Xoom is the fact that hard-core multi-tasking is possible even under heavy load. This is a big plus as you will be able to do more than one thing at a time without glitches or lag. The 3D graphics performance is also top class and makes watching HD multimedia content a pleasure. The scroll buttons move very smoothly and there are no other roadblocks in this department.
The widgets can be scrolled too, and the large HD resolution display is really nice to look at. Its resolution is in fact higher than that in the iPad. Another big plus point for the tablet is that it offers HDMI out with mirror mode, which allows the option of web-surfing and playing games on the television.
Cons
Here is what does not work for the Motorola Android tablet: First of all there is no 4G at launch. Only 3G connectivity is available at the moment and one will have to wait till the later half of the year for 4G. The exterior chassis--made of metal--is prone to smudges and fingerprints as is the case with most glossy finishes. Moreover, there is no removable battery and no microSD card slot.
Performance
When it comes to performance though there are few reasons to complain; the Android platform works very well with this tablet and offers hassle free web browsing, photo/movie viewing or playing games. Motorola appears to have taken full advantage of the dual core processor.
3D graphics have been included right out of the box, like 3D buildings in Google Maps and a 3D video wall in the snazzy You Tube application.
All in all, the Motorola Xoom tablet is a very good buy for the price. It has great external and internal features and offers a very good battery life. It is suitable for all the purposes it is built for, and by and large the consumer gets great value for money.
